Dimitris has been involved in gymnastics, as a daily activity, from a very early age. His first contact with the practice of yoga came much later in 2005, at Atmanasana Yoga Studio. Ever since the very first month, one video presenting Ujjayi pranayama in combination with asanas formed his inspiration for the practice. After years of dedication to the practice of yoga, both on a physical and spiritual level, in 2011 he managed to meet David Swenson in Edinburgh, the man he had seen in that video, six years earlier. David is acknowledged today as one of the earliest practitioners and trainers of Ashtanga Vinyasa. Since then Dimitris attends David’s training programs and seminars, without neglecting his daily practice, which always reminds him of the student within. Acknowledging the individuality of each and every practitioner, his way of guiding is plain and simple, using the practice as a means of restoring body and mind. Dimitris Papadakis is also the founder of the Abhyasa Ashtanga Shala which was founded at the begging of 2014.

Spiritual vs Non-Spiritual Yoga Practice

More and more frequently I hear these days when I encounter new students the words “spiritual” and “non-spiritual practice”. Recently I had a conversation with a new coming student about his preference for spiritual yoga classes rather than classes with too many and “difficult” asanas. When I asked him to
