Medjool Dates: The Healthiest Natural Sweetener!2 min read

I have tasted them for the first time, twenty years ago, in a trip to Morocco – Tunisia. Their sweet taste was stamped on my palate and my heart since then as they were reminding me of the toffee, i used to eat without stop, when i was a small girl. Ever since, i ask for a small package from all my friends, who plan to visit these exotic countries. But only the Medjool ones!!!

The Medjool dates are bigger than the other types of dates, fleshy, soft, fat with a wonderful sweet caramel taste. They are more tasteful than the other types too, with a moist and meaty flesh texture, rather low calories and remarkable nutritional facts.

They are consumed fresh raw or dried.

It is the harvest of the date palm tree which is found in Northern Africa, the Canary Islands, California, the Middle East, Pakistan, northwestern India and Afghanistan. In our country and along the Mediterranean shores of Europe is grown as an ornamental tree.

The medjool dates are rich in antioxidants, carotenoids, vitamin A, vitamin C, fibre. They are also loaded with many vitamins and minerals such as calcium, manganese, iron, magnesium, selenium, potassium, phosphorus, copper, zinc, vitamin B and vitamin K.  Moreover they contain tannins famous of their anti-inflammatory properties.

  • They boost the bone health
  • They are a natural energy booster due to natural sugars they contain. These sugars are easily processed and utilised by the body for energy –  a perfect idea for a quick snack before or during the workout.

Two-three pieces of them are perfect as a snack between meals. You can add them as a sugar alternative to your desserts or as a sweetener to your smoothies, in your fruit salads, (matching with apples and walnuts), energy bars, biscuits, chocolates, cakes, tarts. You can also stuff them with walnuts or goat cheese or even cover them with dark chocolate.

They are considered the healthiest natural sweetener and they deserve to be in your diet!! Use them as an afternoon pick-me-up to ward off tiredness instead of another cup of coffee.
